What is Evidence Based Practice?
Subsequent posts will begin to cover the current Research Based Evidence in regards to various conditions that we commonly see as physiotherapists/physical therapists.
Whilst I think it is extremely important for us to be aware of the Research Evidence, but this alone Evidence Based Practice (EBP).
So what is Evidence Based Practice?
Sackett et al (2000) refer to three components of EBP:
- Patient Values/Goals
- Clinical Expertise
- Research Evidence
These components are hopefully quite self explanatory.
I think there are issues in our profession in that physiotherapists don’t practice true EBP by practising all 3 components to the best of their ability.
The following is a recent Professional Issues Paper I submitted to the Australian College of Physiotherapists as part of my Specialisation Training Program. The topic being in relation to EBP.
Interested to hear any thoughts in regards to this paper. I hope it was of some interest.
